So the Mavs have picked the guy they're targeting during free agency, Marcin Gortat. So what does 2 years worth of 12.1 minutes per game, 3.7 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game get you in today's sports economy? That would be a 5 year deal starting at $5.6 million. Of course there's a chance Orlando could match the offer, but they'd probably be crazy to do so at that much money. But before we really lambaste the Mavs for this apparent move let's take a look at the Mavs center checklist.
Is he a center? Yes.
Is he white? Yes.
Is he from some country other than America? Yes, Poland in this case.
Is he overrated? Most likely. Honestly hard to tell for a guy that averages 12.1 minutes for his 2 year career.
Are we willing to over pay by upwards of $3 million? Of course!
Have we had success with big, white, Eastern European centers in the past? Pavel Podkolzin baby! Granted, Gortat doesn't have a known pituitary gland issue, so that's a plus.
Is he the right guy for us? Hell yes!
Just last year the Mavs wasted their entire MLE on DeSagana Diop and we all know how well that worked out. Diop did have worse overall career numbers than Gortat, so at least progress has been made there. But with Dampier's contract being prime trade bait it's a scary thought that this guy could be the starting center by the end of next season.
