The Curious Case of Holland and Feliz

Brett Perryman has a blog entry up this morning talking about the Rangers treatment of Derek Holland so far this season. I was going to write pretty much the same thing but Brett does a better job than I could, so go that post out. I do still have a couple things to say about it though.

The way Holland and Neftali Feliz are being treated this year is confusing at the least. Both of these guys figure to be an important part of the rotation in 2010. One would think the Rangers would have them pitching every five days to work on their secondary pitches and building up their arms to throw 160 - 180 innings next season. Instead, Holland has been shuffled from bullpen to starter five times now and Feliz has been pitching out of Oklahoma City's bullpen for the past three weeks.

The Feliz move to the bullpen is the more curious of the two. I understand wanting him in the major league 'pen later this season to help out, but why does he need to be there in OKC? Holland didn't pitch in relief prior to being called up this season. Neither did David Price when he came up and dominated in the 'pen for the Rays last year. I just don't understand why you would limit Feliz's development time unless the Rangers have already pegged him as a future closer and don't expect him to start at all in the majors.
